15 Spotify Features Most Listeners Never Use (Jam, Blend, DJ and More)

Key takeaways

  • Spotify hides some of its best features behind small icons and three-dot menus — Jam, Blend, daylist and the sleep timer are the ones most people discover last.
  • Many of these features are free: Blend, collaborative playlists, daylist, sleep timer, private sessions and Liked Songs filters all work without Premium.
  • AI DJ, Smart Shuffle, AI Playlist, Jam hosting and offline downloads need Premium, and several are limited to supported markets.
  • Menus move around between app versions. If a step doesn't match your screen, update the app and use search inside Settings.

Most people open Spotify, hit play on the same three playlists and never look further. That's a shame, because the app has quietly gained a long list of social, discovery and convenience features over the past few years. Some are clever, some are genuinely useful every day, and a few of them are free even if you have never paid a cent.

Below are 15 features worth knowing, grouped by what they help you do, with steps for each and a clear note on whether you need Premium. Feature availability depends on your country, device and app version, so treat "Free" and "Premium" labels as the general rule rather than a promise. If you're weighing an upgrade, our Spotify Free vs Premium guide and Spotify Premium plans and prices price breakdown will help.

Social features: listen together

1. Jam — a shared queue for parties and road trips

Jam turns one person's phone into a group DJ booth. Everyone in the session can add tracks to a shared queue in real time, and Spotify mixes in recommendations that suit the whole group's taste. It's ideal for house parties, car journeys and office playlists where nobody wants to hand over their phone.

  1. Start playing something, then tap the devices icon or the three-dot menu on the Now Playing screen.
  2. Choose Start a Jam.
  3. Invite people by sharing a link, showing a QR code, or — on supported phones — holding phones close together.
  4. As host, you can remove tracks and control who can join or change the queue.

Premium to host Free users can often join a Jam, particularly when they're in the same location, but the rules have changed before, so check your app.

2. Blend — one playlist, everyone's taste

Blend creates a playlist that combines the listening habits of two to ten people, refreshed daily. It also shows a "taste match" score, which is a fun way to find out which friend actually shares your music taste.

  1. Tap Create (the + icon) or search for "Blend".
  2. Select Blend and tap Invite to share a link.
  3. Once your friend accepts, the Blend appears in your Library. Add more people from the playlist's menu, up to 10 in total.

3. Collaborative playlists

Unlike a Blend, a collaborative playlist is hand-built. Everyone you invite can add, remove and reorder songs — perfect for wedding playlists or a shared workout mix.

  1. Open a playlist you own and tap the add user icon.
  2. Share the invite link. Anyone who opens it becomes a collaborator.
  3. Remove collaborators or make the playlist private again from the same menu.

Discovery features: find new music faster

4. AI DJ — a personal radio host

The AI DJ plays a stream of tracks picked from your history and new recommendations, with short voiced commentary between songs. Tap the DJ button to skip to a different vibe when the current one doesn't fit, and in some markets you can make voice or text requests.

  1. On Home, switch to the Music filter and look for the DJ card, or search "DJ".
  2. Tap play. Press the DJ icon in the bottom-right to change direction.

Premium Available in many English-speaking markets and some other countries and languages.

5. daylist — a playlist that changes with your mood

daylist updates several times a day with names like "chill indie Sunday morning", reflecting what you tend to play at that hour. It's surprisingly accurate and a great way to rediscover forgotten favorites.

  1. Search for daylist or find it in the "Made for you" section.
  2. Tap the heart to save it. It will keep refreshing automatically.

6. Smart Shuffle

Smart Shuffle plays your playlist in random order and slips in recommended tracks that fit. Recommendations are marked with a sparkle icon; tap the plus to keep a song permanently.

  1. Open any playlist you own.
  2. Tap the shuffle button until it shows the sparkle (Smart Shuffle) icon — it cycles between off, shuffle and Smart Shuffle.

7. AI Playlist

Type a prompt like "upbeat 90s Britpop for a rainy commute" and Spotify generates a playlist you can refine with follow-up prompts.

  1. Tap Create > AI Playlist.
  2. Enter a prompt, review the result, then refine or save.

Premium Available in select markets only; Spotify has expanded the list gradually.

Playback controls you'll use every day

8. Sleep timer

Fall asleep to an album or podcast without it playing all night. On the Now Playing screen, tap the three dots > Sleep timer and pick anything from 5 minutes to 1 hour, or "end of track/episode".

9. Crossfade and Automix

Crossfade blends the end of one song into the start of the next. Go to Settings > Playback, turn on Crossfade and set a duration from 0 to 12 seconds (5–6 seconds suits most playlists). Automix, when available, creates smarter DJ-style transitions on supported playlists. Keep Gapless playback on so live albums and classical works flow without breaks.

10. Private session

Playing lullabies for a toddler or holiday music in July? A private session hides your activity from followers and keeps it from skewing your recommendations.

  1. On mobile, tap your profile picture > Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Private session.
  2. On desktop, click your profile name and choose Private session.

Private sessions end automatically after several hours of inactivity or when you restart the app. To permanently exclude a playlist from your taste profile, open its menu and choose Exclude from your taste profile.

Pro tip

Combine a private session with a sleep timer for white noise or meditation tracks. Your Discover Weekly and Wrapped will thank you.

Devices, lyrics and your library

11. Spotify Connect

Connect lets your phone act as a remote for smart speakers, TVs, game consoles and computers. The music streams directly to the device, so calls and notifications on your phone won't interrupt playback and your battery lasts longer. Tap the devices icon at the bottom of the player and pick a device on the same network. Free users can use Connect with many devices, but some controls are limited. For help with a multi-room or car setup, see our Device & Spotify Connect Setup service.

12. Lyrics

Scroll up on the Now Playing screen to see synced lyrics that scroll with the song; tap the expand icon for full screen. You can also share a lyric card to social media by selecting lines. Lyrics availability for free users has changed over time and depends on licensing in your market.

13. Liked Songs filters

A Liked Songs list with thousands of tracks is hard to use. Open Liked Songs and look for the genre and mood chips at the top (for example "Indie", "Chill" or "Workout"). Tap one to instantly narrow the list, then shuffle within it. You can also use the search bar inside any playlist to find a song without scrolling.

14. Offline mode

Premium subscribers can download up to 10,000 songs on each of up to five devices. Tap the download arrow on any playlist, album or podcast. You need to go online at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. Set Download quality separately in Settings — our Spotify audio quality guide explains the storage cost of each level. Free users can download podcasts but not music.

15. Android Auto, CarPlay and car view

Spotify works natively in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with large buttons and voice control through Google Assistant or Siri. On phones, the app also switches to a simplified driving layout when connected to a car's Bluetooth in some versions. Try saying "Play my daylist on Spotify" to your car's assistant for a hands-free start.

Bonus: small settings with a big payoff

Equalizer

Find it in Settings under Audio quality or Playback. A gentle bass or vocal preset can transform cheap earbuds.

Canvas

Those looping visuals on Now Playing can be turned off in Settings to save battery and data.

Queue editing

Long-press any track and choose Add to queue; drag tracks in the queue to reorder them.

Audiobooks

Eligible Premium plans include 15 hours of audiobook listening per month in supported markets.

Video podcasts

Many shows now have video. Turn it off per episode to listen in the background with less data.

Wrapped

Your yearly listening recap usually arrives in early December — private sessions keep guilty pleasures out of it.

Skip the "unlocked" mods

Modified apps that promise free Premium features often break Jam, DJ and Connect, can get your account banned and may carry malware. Read hidden risks of modded APKs before installing anything outside the official app stores.

Frequently asked questions

Which Spotify features are free?

Blend, collaborative playlists, daylist, the sleep timer, private sessions, Liked Songs filters, lyrics in most markets and car integrations are generally available to free users. Jam hosting, AI DJ, Smart Shuffle, AI Playlist and offline downloads need Premium. Availability varies by market.

Can free users join a Spotify Jam?

In many cases, yes. A Premium user has to start the Jam, but free users can often join and add songs, especially when they are in the same room. Spotify changes the rules from time to time, so check the app.

Why can't I find the Spotify AI DJ?

AI DJ requires Premium and is only available in supported markets and languages. Update the app, then search for DJ or look for the DJ card on the Music tab of the Home screen.

How many people can join a Spotify Blend?

A Blend can include up to 10 people. Each person must accept the invite, and the playlist refreshes daily based on everyone's listening.

Does a private session hide my listening from Wrapped?

Generally, yes. Listening in a private session is hidden from followers and is not used for your recommendations or taste profile, which Wrapped draws on. The session ends automatically after a few hours of inactivity or when you restart the app, so turn it on each time you need it.
